This website is mostly about Pemba Bay and northern Mozambique and yachting and SCUBA diving in those parts.  Pemba Bay is listed as Port Amelia on the nautical charts.  It is 13 degrees South, 40 degrees 30 mins East - 150 nautical miles south of the Tanzanian border, 400 nautical miles south of Pemba Island Tanzania, 250 nautical miles south-west of Grand Comore, and 400 nautical miles west of Madagascar.  As South Africans we prefer Pemba Bay because:

  • There are no cyclones and no tsunamis!;

  • We can drive there (see attached Johannesburg to Pemba road report);
  • The water is warm (25C+) and there are none of the crashing waves that make sea access so difficult in South Africa.  Pemba is not a surfer's paradise and good gamefishing is 80 sea miles away at Lazarus bank, but for kayakers, and hoby catters, and SCUBA divers it offers plenty;
  • It is a real getaway from suburban life: The shopping mall is open air and, unlike South Africa, there are no violent crimes;
  • and, most importantly, our Tiki30 catamaran can bob safely at its mooring in front of the Nautilus Hotel.
